Family biodigester in Caldas

List item 1

The husband heard that it was possible to produce gas with the manure from the pigs and chickens, so as a family they decided to locate a person who helped them with the installation on November 29, 2019, by January 05, 2020 they had gas.

The biodigester installed is of the sausage type, but the family would like to have a geomembrane one because it is more resistant to shocks.

Technical characteristics of the proposal

PVC pipes, hose, plastic sausage type 5mts, 4 pigs, 70 hens, coffee mucilage per day: 180 kilos in harvest.

Productive, community, environmental, or economic processes or activities that were positively impacted by the implementation of the community experience of TEJ.

The community energy experience is associated with the production of coffee, cocoa, banana, avocado and self-consumption products such as beans, corn, beans and long onions; this has strengthened their food autonomy.

The family also sells products such as pork, fish, eggs and chickens.

Beneficiaries of the experience

1 family consisting of: 1 man and 1 woman

  1. Thanks to gas, firewood is no longer used and smoke production has been eliminated, which has had an important impact on health. The time spent cutting firewood is used for other tasks on the farm; this also avoids impacting nature.
  2. The gas they get from the biodigester allows them to cook for the family, and I would even like to know what to do with the gas they do not use, since they produce more than they actually use.
  3. Elements that were generally discarded (chicken manure, pig feces, coffee mucilage) have been used to avoid contamination, thus reducing the number of flies and avoiding a source of contamination.
  4. Chemical use was reduced by 30%.
  5. The experience has been made visible in the local coffee growers’ cooperative, which has led to reflection on the use of waste and how this avoids contamination.
  1. The plastic had broken, but the family’s creativity was used to remedy the problem by gluing another plastic over it and pouring earth on top so that it could not be lifted.

Women’s participation in the TEJ community experience

The women of the family have participated in the whole process of construction and execution of the experience; they have supported the opening of the ditches to bury the pipe, the construction of the rooms to deposit the animal feces and the base where the biodigester is located, as well as the structure that was built to protect the biodigester.

Impact of the community experience of TEJ on public policy

The biodigester and what the experience triggered around it has allowed him to participate as a speaker; this was the case of a meeting with the councilors of his municipality.
