Efficient vertical dehydrator – dryer AVE

List item 1

When the organization started the garlic processing process, it realized that the energy cost was too high, which led the organization to look at other technologies that would allow them to reduce dependence on electricity and make the experience more efficient.

A low consumption dehydration, drying and maillard reaction system was installed, using the automation method and infrared radiation.

Type of technology

Dehydrator, automation, infrared control, solar panels

Technical characteristics of the proposal

1 industrial refrigerator 200L, 70kg capacity and 150w power, which was modified in its structural, electrical and functional system. All the components that generated cold were removed, which now generate heat for the dehydration of the products to be processed, including: black garlic, orellanas and spirilurin.

The products are used for consumption by the people of the AVE families and for marketing in local markets.

The installed capacity is expected to be expanded to 4 industrial coolers, which would allow the dehydration of other hydroponic products that are also grown by the families, including vegetables, fruits and greens.

Productive, community, environmental, or economic processes or activities that were positively impacted by the implementation of the community experience of TEJ.

Hidropónicos AVE grows vegetables, fruits, vegetables, orellanas and dehydrates and processes orellanas, spirulina and black garlic; these products are sold in local markets.

Beneficiaries of the experience

3 families composed of 6 women, 3 men, 1 adolescent (between 13 and 18 years of age) and 3 boys and girls (between 0 and 12 years of age).

  1. Reduce production time, as this system is more efficient.
  2. Reduce dehydration time.
  3. Reduce energy consumption from 1200w to 150w.
  4. Reduce labor in processes.
  5. Use clean energy production systems, clean production without pesticides and agrochemicals.
  6. To offer alternatives that help to take advantage of crops in remote areas to provide processing and value chain in dehydrated products.
  7. Provide solutions to energy consumption and provide alternatives to respond to global warming.
  1. Finding optimal low-cost materials for the main thermal structure. This was solved by modifying the cooling system of a recycled cooler, which resulted in an airtight structure.
  2. High material costs.

Women’s participation in the TEJ community experience

In AVE, women participate in all phases of the process (harvest, post-harvest, planting, processing, packaging).

An elderly woman operates the dehydration system and monitors the process of the production system. This role has allowed this person to improve his income and generate income for his family.
