Cooagrosanroque is a cooperative that promotes the environmental and productive development of the municipality of Oporapa, through a positive impact approach on the Serranía de Minas, where the waters of the community aqueducts and population centers are born.
In the last six years, beekeeping has been implemented, from 6 beehives to more than 100 throughout the municipality, this makes Cooagrosanroque be recognized in the territory, for the wide range of help in the pollination of crops and wild flora species.
The protection of bees is promoted and support is provided to families interested in the subject; honeycombs are rescued when they are at risk of (burning or fumigation).
Currently, in addition to beekeeping, work is being done to rescue the native stingless bees (Meliponas), which are in danger of extinction due to the loss of forests. Meliponiculture is used as a bee conservation strategy and materials such as guadua and some wood are used for the construction of hives and bee reproduction.
Both strategies allow families to have an indispensable food for health and at times a product to fight diseases, due to the medicinal properties of honey and its derivatives.
Type of technology
Bioconstruction through the use of guadua for the construction of beehives for meliponas.
Technical characteristics of the proposal
The drawers are handmade with saws and recycled materials.
Productive, community, environmental, or economic processes or activities that were positively impacted by the implementation of the community experience of TEJ.
Honey production, mainly through beekeeping, pollen, propolis and wax are also marketed. The units are associated with conservation areas and coffee, avocado and sugarcane crops.
In the case of Meliponas, they produce less honey, but it contains better medicinal qualities; the reproduction of these species is supported and the population of native bees has been increased.
Beneficiaries of the experience
30 families composed of 30 women, 30 men, 15 young people (13 to 18 years old) and 65 children (0 to 12 years old).
Achievements and problems encountered during implementation
ACHIEVEMENTS:
- Forest conservation: this is because an area is set aside for apis mellifera, which guarantees the conservation of these areas.
- Pollination: the practice of beekeeping with meliponae guarantees better productivity of food and agricultural crops, as well as the pollination of wild species.
- Decrease in the use of agrochemicals: Families have stopped using agrochemicals because they are aware of the damage that bees can suffer from the application of these chemicals.
- Cultural events: Currently, the «bee pollinator festival» is held, in which the entire municipality and surrounding areas are invited to celebrate the conservation of the species; forums and folkloric marches about bees are held at the meetings.
PROBLEMS:
- The dependence to elaborate the material for the crates, since there is no equipment such as wood cutters, sanding machine, paint, cover, etc., this limits the range and reproduction of apis mellifera bees and melipona bees.
- Lack of facilities for workshops on the elaboration of crates.
- Reliance on the use of the electrical grid to develop the bins that will be used for community purposes.
- While learning about bee handling, stings have occurred.
Women’s participation in the TEJ community experience
Women play a fundamental role in the process, since they are part of the beekeeping activities, some of them are mothers who attend and check the beekeeping units and others support the honey harvesting process.
Impact of the community experience of TEJ on public policy
There is no approved public policy, but at the time of registration, the Municipal and Departmental support network of the Collective Intervention Plan of the Health Secretariat was including this issue in the public policy of the health sector.
